Preserving Life's Moments: Jo Tennant's 20 Photos Initiative

Read: 109

Jo Tennant, an award-winning photographer and founder of the innovative service, 20 Photos, curates hundreds of digital images into a selection of twenty fine-art prints that bring life’s important moments to tangible reality. Our conversation with Jo took place in her studio, overlooking Portobello on Edinburgh's coast, surrounded by stacks of exquisite prints.

Jo affirms, Often we don't understand the significance of a moment until we look back. Indeed, s have an innate instinct to preserve memories that they want to cherish for future generations. This is precisely what 20 Photos achieves. By sifting through thousands of photographs and distilling them into a personal collection of twenty images, Jo encapsulates the essence of life in something tactile and meaningful.

Born out of necessity during the pandemic's peak lockdown, when traditional photography work was scarce, Jo decided to leverage her creativity on her own family photos. She spent 100 days editing, curating, and printing these memories into physical portfolios and prints that adorned her home walls.

Jo explns that a portfolio with just twenty images is just enough for the mind to process while still telling a unique story. It's about personal significance rather than showcasing highlights on social media platforms like Instagram. 20 Photos celebrates life's authentic moments, away from digital screens seeking external validation.

The essence of 20 Photos lies in its ability to highlight the beauty of life’s insignificant yet meaningful moments. Jo seeks out unposed laughter and genuine embraces that capture joy. She also looks for those rare instances when a group of fris is captured mid-jump into the sea, arms rsed agnst the setting sun - these are magic.

For Jo, photography isn't just about capturing an image; it's about freezing a moment in time to share with future generations. A personal story that unfolds through each photograph can be shared with loved ones or discovered by descants decades later. I encourage people to write stories on the back of their photos, she shares.

She reminisces about her childhood, how discovering that one photo - a small black-and-white print of horses in the desert - was once accompanied by an anonymous photographer's note about Bedouin tribesmen and the pyramids miles away made her feel connected with history. The same experience is replicated when clients share their memories on family photos.

Jo's passion for 20 Photos comes from the belief that life’s most important moments are often overlooked but can be incredibly precious once preserved. She bring these moments into focus, weaving a story through every photograph, whether capturing a shared experience with Dad or learning something new together.

In essence, Jo Tennant not only photographs life's fleeting moments; she makes them tangible and cherished. Her work serves as a reminder of how much value lies in the images we capture on our phones dly.
