The history of ancient Chinese currency is both long and diverse, reflecting over 5,000 years of Chinese civilization. This unique cultural heritage has developed comprehensive systems with rich content, deep roots, broad connotations, and distinctive features. The Ancient Chinese Currency exhibition is a meticulous selection from over 200,000 artifacts in the National Museum of China's collection. It further enriches this display with more than 200 other types of cultural relics, divided into two sections.

A diverse range of currency items are on show here, starting from primitive sea shells and progressing through knife-shaped coins, spade-shaped coins, ring-shaped coins, to the distinctive round coins with a central square hole used for nearly two millennia, as well as -made copper and silver dollars from late Qing Dynasty.

The artifacts showcase clear historical origins and great diversity. They encompass various forms of metal coins and paper money dating back to Yuan Dynasty, alongside items that represent ancient currency in use and those embodying elements of Chinese folk culture. The exhibition also presents coin molds, samples, paper money printing plates, and other materials highlighting the development of traditional casting techniques.

The collection's size at National Museum of China is impressive; it encompasses a comprehensive range covering various eras and types of currency with most pieces in excellent condition. This includes the world's largest number of first-grade cultural artifacts, making it an outstanding highlight of the NMC collections.
