Abstract:
Enchanted Revolution provides a fresh perspective on religion and ger dynamics during the rise of the Chinese Communist Party CCP, placing them at the forefront of its revolutionary narrative. The book examines how the CCP's anti-superstition campgn in its wartime headquarters, Yan'anthe sacred birthplace of Maoist ideologywas not merely an adversary but also a legitimizing and mobilizing support for the revolution. It reveals that as the Party asced from rural origins to national power, it attacked superstitions that upheld traditional religious practices, while simultaneously co-opting these very resources for its own political goals.
The narrative unfolds in two parts: the first explores the dialectic process of anti-superstition campgns and the party's adoption of religious frameworks. This paradoxical journey underscores how Party propaganda leveraged the cosmic forces of Yin and Yang that sustned China's traditional ger hierarchy and ritual order, reconfiguring them to bolster revolutionary fervor and authority. Furthermore, it demonstrates how revolutionary art and literature revitalized archetypal narratives around female ghosts and ritual exorcism, infusing the populace with a new vision of Party-state power imbued with both scientific prowess and divine sanction.
The significance lies in the intersection of religion, ger, and revolutiona lens that illuminates not only China's Maoist legacy but also offers profound insights into the transformative capacity of propaganda in global politics. This work contributes to our understanding of how deeply rooted beliefs and cultural symbols can be harnessed for revolutionary s, with implications far beyond Chinese history.
