The Numismatic Journey: Exploring the Rich Cultural Collection

Can you recall playing with your parents' coins and hearing tales of their journeys? Now, you have an opportunity to relive that experience but this time with one of the world's largest coin collections - Munzkabinett Berlin! Each coin holds a story - perhaps it was handled by Alexander the Great or Caesar while financing their world-changing campgns!

This interactive visualization platform showcases a portion of its numismatic collection, merging its physical essence with historical context. By dynamically arranging these coins in different layouts and filters, users are granted an understanding of its sheer magnitude while uncovering new insights. Unlike conventional table displays, dynamic arrangements create a unique experience allowing you to sort coins by metal type or country of origin; visualizing coin streams that can be dissected based on dimensions such as type or nation.

The core objective behind this research was crafting alternative arrangements respecting the multifaceted and material richness exhibited by the collection while making it accessible in an engaging manner for a lay audience. The design process involved various steps, including visits to both the physical museum and its online database, collaborative activities like a collaging workshop with numismatic experts, sketching and prototyping sessions followed by feedback and evaluation rounds.
